In the past, buildings often reflected the culture of a society but today all modern buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming more and more similar.

I think it is reasonable to say that the old building had some special features or styles. For instance, HK used to be the colony of Britain, and some buildings such as the main building of HK University and Stanley's Murray House, had the Victorian architectural styles. This kind of building reflected the history of HK which was under control of Britain at that time.

In addition, in the past, each country was isolated due to poor transportation network between each other. Therefore, they had to build the buildings with the local materials. They had their own architectural style to suit the local climate, for instance, igloo in the North Pole or the mud hut in Africa.

In contrast, nowadays, due to limited spaces and increasing populations in all the cities of the world, local governments have to build high-rise buildings to solve the problem. Also, the architectural style has been changed from special designs to international/standardized styles. There are some advantages for this including the decrease of building cost and also it is safer to build a standardized building.

Overall,
